Thesis Collection 2007

Each piece was sketched, draped in muslin, drafted into a pattern, and sewn by hand.

The collection was inspired by Patti Smith, the musician, poet, and rock star.  The mood evokes her 70’s punk and menswear looks, while adding modern femininity.  Instead of the typical interpretation of punk, i.e. ripped t-shirts etc., this collection is a more refined and luxurious interpretation.  The essence of punk is represented through unexpected details and by deconstructing the norms of design and patternmaking.

Tones of color are added to her black and white wardrobe, and black is switched out for deep navy. The color palette is dark navy, white, taupe, mauve and hues of blue - from saturated cerulean to ice blue.  Neon orange is an accent used in stitching, paneling, and interior piping.

The men’s white button down shirt is a key look, as are her suspenders. The white shirt becomes more feminine using a vintage dolman camp shirt as the pattern, and super light weight satin weave cotton as the fabrication.  Her suspenders are reimagined as part of a mini dress made of double faced wool, and as contrast color insets in the jersey top.  That same jersey top has round dolman sleeves with curved seams and pleating. The pocket of the trench coat is 3D and has nylon piecing. The oversized T-shirt becomes an A-line t-shirt dress in navy chiffon.  The simple slip dress is made of heavy weight silk charmeuse.  The navy wool melton coat (based on the idea of the classic men’s peacoat) has an extra-large shawl collar and a cropped asymmetrical shape. These unique design details stay true to the original concept and mood.
