GLAZ
Concept Design and Development, Fall Menswear
GLAZ, is intended to be a September drop, a palette cleansing collection for true fall. This theme is about understanding the effects of global warming and thinking about sustainability. Nicolas Floch’s book, Glaz, was the main source of inspiration. The definition of the word Glaz, is a color somewhere between green and blue, in reference to the color of the ocean. Floch explores life, both above and below the water. The book shows photos of fishing vessels and coral reef, as well as his large installation sculptures.
Another source of inspiration are photos from the Vortex Swim. Ben Lecomte set out on a mission to swim from Hawaii to San Francisco, CA. He swam through The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (i.e. a huge conglomeration of plastic garbage in the middle of the Pacific Ocean) to raise awareness of plastic polluting our oceans and harming the marine life and ecosystem. A sailing team and photographer accompanied him and documented the journey with compelling photos.
Glaz themed clothes are functional, casual, rugged and cool. Big ideas in this theme are vintage and work wear inspired product, sustainable materials, and natural dyes like indigo and botanical. Outer layer fabrics are water proof fabrics like rubber, PU coated, and wax coated cloth. Inner layer fabrics have warm, textured, and brushed hand feels, like waffle knit and brushed flannel. Aggressive washes, showing highs and lows, are used throughout the collection. Key items are chinos, the canvas work jacket, and a techy waterproof winter coat.
The color palette is based on a range of blues, greens, and earth tones. Intensely saturated ‘sailboat’ red is the accent color.
